Authors are requested to submit their manuscripts electronically, by using the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) at http://ees.elsevier.com/jbiosc/.
After registration, authors will be asked to upload their article, an extra copy of the abstract, and associated artwork. The submission tool will generate a PDF file to be used for the reviewing process. The submission tool generates an automatic reply and a manuscript number will be generated for future correspondence.
If the manuscript is a resubmission, the former manuscript number should be indicated.
Files to be Uploaded
The following files should be submitted:
- Cover letter
- Check list (MS Word)
- Payment policy agreement (MS Word)
- Manuscript file (Title page, Abstract, Text body, References, Figure legends. Put all elements in correct order)
- Figures
- Tables
The cover letter must address the following points: 1) all authors agree to submit the work to JBB, 2) the work has not been published before and is not being submitted to another journal, 3) the novelty and significant contribution of the submitted work must be briefly described, 4) the transfer of copyright from the author to the Society for Biotechnology, Japan (SBJ), 5) whether the manuscript has been checked by language editing services prior to submission or not (please attach certificate, if applicable).
Page Charges
The Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering has page charges. Authors should approve the payment policy in the cover letter. SBJ will send an invoice to the corresponding author when the manuscript is accepted for publication.
Language Correction
SBJ strongly recommends that authors who are unsure of proper English usage have their manuscripts checked by language editing services prior to submission. Manuscripts that do not conform to Standard English usage may be editorially rejected and returned to the authors. Manuscripts under review may be sent to language correction at the editor’s discretion. In such case, the costs must be borne by the author.
System Requirements
Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Netscape 7.0 or higher, Mozilla 1.7 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher. Mac OS X users may also use Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 3.0 or higher.
PDF viewer: Adobe Viewer 6 or higher, Adobe Acrobat 6 or higher. You can download the free Adobe Reader 7 here.
NOTE: Since EES uses pop-ups, we recommend that you disable your Internet browser’s pop-up blocker while viewing your journal’s site. If you have administrative rights on your computer, please add ees.elsevier.com to your list of trusted websites. Taking these steps should ensure that EES runs smoothly while you are using the application. For more details on how to configure your Internet browser to enable or disable pop-ups, please refer to the built-in Help function included in your browser.
File format
Figures and tables should NOT be included in the manuscript file but be separately uploaded to your manuscript. The system will convert the source files to a single PDF for the review process. Figures and tables will be included at end of the PDF file.
It is recommended that each individual figure file does not exceed 4 MB and that the combined size of all the files for submission does not exceed 10 MB. Upload of large files may result in problems such as time out during upload or PDF build failure.
Text
- Use standard fonts like Times or Times New Roman. Font size should be 12 pt.
- Avoid using double-byte characters (Asian fonts).
- Use Symbol font for special characters such as Greek letters and mathematical symbols.
- Number all pages in sequence, including title page.
- Manuscript pages should have line numbers.
Figures
EPS, TIFF, and Microsoft Office files should be used for images.
