The Gottfried Wagener Prize is granted to young scientists in Japan for path breaking research that is driven by the power of imagination and innovation, and contributes to shaping tomorrow’s society.

The project is supported by the German Federal Minister of Education and Research and the German Academic Exchange Service – DAAD.

Eligibility Applicants must be affiliated to a research institute or university in Japan and be under 46 years of age.
Fields of Research
  1. The Prize is awarded for application-oriented research work in the areas of Environment & Energy, Healthcare or Safety & Security.
  2. The submitted work should propose solutions in the following industries:
    • Automotive & Transportation
    • Chemicals & Materials
    • Electronics & Photonics
    • Medical Equipment & Diagnostics
    • Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals
    • Manufacturing & Machinery
    • Energy Generation and Distribution Technology (incl. New Energy)
    • Urban Infrastructure & Construction
  3. The submission may be the result of ongoing research or a work completed within the past two years.
Prize
  • 1st Prize: 1 x 4.000.000 Yen
  • 2nd Prize: 1 x 2.000.000 Yen
  • 3rd Prize: 3 x 1.000.000 Yen

In addition to the prize money, the Awardees will be granted a scholarship by DAAD for a shortterm stay at a German research institution or university of their choice.
