Membership Types

Individual membership in the Society for Biotechnology, Japan is open to anyone from any nation who is concerned with the biotechnology. Supporting membership is available to any individuals and governmental/non-governmental organizations, private companies or academic institutions. Institutional membership is available to governmental/non-governmental organizations, private companies or academic institutions.

The membership year runs from January 1 to December 31.

  • Membership fees are tax-exempt.
  • Membership dues noted above are payable in full, regardless of the date of membership application.
  • SBJ membership is mandatory to subscribe to the print edition of the Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering (JBB).
  • A complimentary copy of the Seibutsu-kogaku Kaishi (in Japanese) can be sent to overseas members upon request.
  • Please note that the annual membership fee is non-refundable once payment has been made.

How to Apply for SBJ Membership

Step 1 — Submit an application
Apply using the appropriate online form:

# Application for Active member or Student member
 Available in Japanese only. Please use your browser’s translation function if necessary.


# Apply for Overseas member


# Application for Supporting member or Institutional member
 Available in Japanese only. Please use your browser’s translation function if necessary.


Step 2 — Pay the membership fee
After submitting the application, please pay the first year’s membership fee within one week.
If you subscribe to the print edition of JBB, please include an additional fee to the membership fee.

Applications submitted during the following periods will be treated as:

January 1 – November 30 Current year
December 1 – December 31 Following year


Step 3 — Membership number issued
Once payment is confirmed, the SBJ office will send:

  • Membership number
  • Initial password for login to "My Page"

Members can change their passwords and update their information through the "My Page".
Please keep your membership number and password for future use.

Payment Methods

Membership fees can be paid by credit card or bank transfer.
Note: For Supporting members and Institutional members, the first payment must be made by bank transfer.

Instructions will be provided in the application confirmation email.

Bank Transfer
When making a bank transfer, please enter your full name as the sender.
Bank transfer fees must be borne by the applicant.
If payment is made under a different name, please inform the SBJ Secretariat of:
